Carbon Reduce Accreditation

AVK UK achieves ISO 14064 accreditation through the Achilles ‘Carbon Reduce’ scheme 28-07-2023

AVK UK has achieved ISO 14064 Part 1* accreditation through the Achilles ‘Carbon Reduce’ scheme. This accreditation verifies that AVK UK’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been accurately measured and reported in line with the requirements of the internationally recognised IS0 14064 standard.

Achilles Certificate - Carbon Reduce AVK UK

Chris Leese is AVK UK’s QHSE & Compliance Manager. Chris led the AVK UK team that identified, collected and reported the data submitted to Achilles:

‘Many of the claims made by organisations regarding carbon reduction and sustainability can appear rather flaky and unfounded; not least because they are not subject to any external scrutiny.
The Leadership Team at AVK UK is committed to achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2030. I was tasked with identifying how we could best track our progress towards this goal in a way that inspires confidence in all our stakeholders, including clients, employees and supply chain.
To achieve ISO 14064 accreditation through the Achilles ‘Carbon Reduce’ scheme, AVK UK has had to accurately calculate its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, as well as Scope 3 elements such as downstream logistics, business travel and waste disposal. It has had to do this for all of its UK sales and manufacturing sites; this data was verified by the Achilles ‘Carbon Reduce’ auditor. We now have a benchmark against which we can monitor our carbon reduction achievements.
Our objective now is to demonstrate that GHG emissions are being reduced year-on-year. We have committed to a challenging reduction target of 25% over the next five years.’

The five-year GHG reduction journey has already started with actions already taken and further programmes in place to tackle some of the more complex and enduring challenges. All of AVK UK’s electricity is now procured from renewable sources backed by Renewable Energy Certificates (REC). Solar panels will shortly be installed at AVK’s facilities in Staveley, Chesterfield. If successful, it is planned to roll out solar panels to other sites across the Group.

According to Chris Leese:

‘The Achilles ‘Carbon Reduce’ process identified that downstream logistics was a significant source of GHG emissions. We are now looking to re-engineer the way we get products to site, including the key role distributors can play. Not all carbon reduction activities are as strategic or complex as this however. A recent energy audit identified we could achieve significant savings simply by stepping down our incoming voltage from 240V to 220V.
The accreditation process has been exceptionally stringent and rigorous. We have had to justify every figure in our submission and provide supporting evidence. The end result, however, is a piece of work we can be proud of and one against which all our future GHG reduction endeavours can be measured.’
