The UK’s 350,000-mile sewer system is set for the largest modernisation in recent history after the announcement of the £10bn National Overflows Plan by UK water industry body Water UK.
A more detailed plan is due to be published later this summer, explaining each water and sewage companies’ approach to reducing overflow incidents in the UK, with the aim of cutting 140,000 a year by the end of the decade.
Several key components have already been outlined, among which are:
- Installation of the equivalent of thousands of new Olympic swimming pools to hold surges in rainwater that would otherwise overload the system.
- Increase in the capacity of sewage treatment works.
- Improve the sewer network by enlarging and improving pipes.
